Overview and metadata sections
The Atomic Age Collection pamphlets include material gathered from three private collections: the Wall Collection, the IDDS Collection and the Calvin Collection.
Major Sir Patrick Wall (b.1916) was an ex-Royal Marines member of the British parliament with a special interest in defense. His library included numerous pro-bomb and pro-military titles.
The Institute of Defense and Disarmament Studies (IDDS) is a think-tank in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The titles in the collection deal mainly with the Space Defense Initiative, otherwise known as "Star Wars."
In addition, some material comes from the library of Professor Melvin Calvin, formerly of the University of California at Berkeley. Professor Calvin (1911-1997), a Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, worked on the Manhattan Project purifying the uranium for the bomb. His collection includes material about the science of the bomb and information about his colleagues in the Manhattan project.
The Atomic Age Collection pamphlets are arranged in four series: Series I. Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), Series II. Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament - Related, Series III. Other Groups, and Series IV. Miscellaneous, arranged by year of publication. Chronologically, topics range from first impressions of the effects of the Atomic Bomb at the end of WWII to anti-nuclear waste activism in the late 1990s.
Pamphlets created by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (Series I) are arranged alphabetically by title. Organizations related to the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament include the Cambridge Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the Cambridge Youth Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and Cambridge Schools Nuclear Disarmament Council, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament Christian Group, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament for the Greenham Women's Peace Camp, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament CYMRU, the Christian Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, and the Trade Union Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Within each organization, pamphlets are organized alphabetically by title.
Series III consists of "Other groups," which include the International Institute for Strategic Studies: Adelphi Papers, the Committee of 100, European Nuclear Disarmament (END), and Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Materials from the International Institute for Strategic Studies are organized by paper number; all the other materials are organized alphabetically.
"Series IV. Miscellaneous" includes pamphlets that are arranged chronologically from 1945 to 1998. The last box includes materials that are undated.
