Summary:
C. Hermann Berendt's transcription of a vocabulary of 24 words, including the numbers 1 to 10, and 100, in the dialect of the Bayano Indians of Panama, as recorded by Berthold Seemann, in his article entitled The aborigines of the Isthmus of Panama (Transactions of the American Ethnological Society, vol. 3, 1853, p. 175-182, the vocabulary on p. 179-181. Also included are four words of Bayano mentioned by Moritz Wagner in his article Eine Reise in das Innere der Landenge von San Blas und der Cordillere von Chepo in der Provinz Panama, in Petermann's geographische Mitteilungen (vol. 8, 1862, p. 132). In both cases, Berendt provides Spanish entries, with the Bayano equivalent, whereas Seemann and Wagner write in English and German, respectively. Origin: Probably written circa 1873; the manuscript uses the same paper as other items on the topic of Darien languages dating from Berendt's stay in New York in 1873, and found in the same bound volume.
