Summary:
Three documents concerning four noble families, the de Vio, the Ezquerra, the del Yerno, and the Herrera. The first document outlines the history of the families from the 14th to the 18th century. All of Spanish origin and members of the Order of Santiago, they were close allies of the ruling dynasties and were granted numerous royal privileges. In the late 16th century, following the Spanish expansion in Southern Italy, numerous members of the four families moved to and prospered in Naples, Palermo, Gaeta, and Messina. Over the centuries, the families became related through marriages and alliances, which are described in the document. Many among the de Vio, the Ezquerra, the del Yerno, and the Herrera obtained prominent roles within the Italian Inquisition and in the courts of the viceroys in Southern Italy. For each family, an etymological history of the name, as well as a brief description of the coat of arms and its elements, is also given. A small number of transcriptions and extracts of official documents conferring privileges to various individuals is present throughout the volume. On numerous instances the author quotes works by Spanish authors and historians, some widely known and some more obscure (Zurita, Abad Pirri, Blasco de Alagon, Alfonso de Azevedo, Filadelfo Muñoz, Bernabé Moreno de Vargas, Alfonso Chacón, Miguel de Molinos, Diego de Mendoza, Juan Arze de Otalora). The second document contains a summary of three volumes allegedly written by Giuseppe de Vio in 1724, concerning the transmission of a complex of hereditary rights and privileges known as majorat (referred to as mayorazgo or maiorazgo in the text) of the family, whose estate was originally founded by Don Pietro del Yerno. Because the mayorazgo was strictly regulated by Spanish law and del Yerno's estate, which had been passed on for numerous generations, was very large, the matter required extensive interpretation. The document contains historical and genealogical information about various members of the de Vio, the Ezquerra, the del Yerno, and the Herrera families, as well as a commentary on Don Pietro's will. The last work is a report concerning the ancestry of Giuseppe de Vio and Monroy. Special attention is given to the services rendered to the Spanish crown by de Vio's predecessors. An alphabetical index, with 18 lettered tabs, contains names of individuals that appear in the first two works and a few more extracts of official documents (p.101-167). One oversize item in parchment containing a painted coat of arms of Giuseppe de Vio and Monroy as well as short commentaries, is stored separately. A similar, smaller item one containing a painted coat of arms of the Herrera and de Rozas families is laid in the manuscript.
