A collection of sermons, catechisms, and other religious documents translated into Kekchi and Pokonchi, as well as a Kekchi grammar and lists of phrases in the two dialects. Also includes a small amount of musical notation for a Latin chant (f. 59v). Those documents which are dated are from the late 1730s and early 1740s. A table of contents by C. Hermann Berendt precedes the documents.
Notes:
Ms. codex.
Title from caption title (f. 1); a later title page in Berendt's hand, probably added at the time of binding, has the title Varios escritos en pocomchi y kekchi del Archivo Parroquial de Coban, Vera Paz (f. ii).
One of the documents bound into this volume is the original of Hippolito de Aguilera's Doctrina christiana from which Item 62 in this same collection was copied. There are also sermons by Aguilera bound into this volume.
The Kekchi grammar bound into this volume (ff. 97r-131v) is the original of Item 69 in this same collection, a fair copy by Berendt with additions and corrections
Pagination: Paper, 205; vi, 1-3, ii, 4-197; modern pencil foliation, lower right recto. The modern foliation, used in this record, includes the table of contents and a page of phrases (ff. 1-3), but the table of contents does not, so its references are consistently the modern foliation minus three leaves.
Binding: 19th-century half leather.
Origin: Written in Vera Paz, in the 18th century.
Penn Provenance:
Documents from the parochial archives of Coban, Vera Paz, given by Don Manuel Gonzalez, priest and vicar of Coban, to C. Hermann Berendt in 1875.
From the collection of C. Hermann Berendt, later acquired by Daniel Garrison Brinton (ex libris stamp on first title page and first leaf of original manuscripts).
