Biography/History:

Coulanges was both a poet, known as an author of chansons, and a political figure, named in 1672 as maître des requêtes au parlement de Paris. He was a first cousin of the marquise de Sévigné and also related to André Le Fèvre d'Ormesson, owner of this codex.

Summary:

Two works recounting European travels made as a member of French diplomatic delegations. The first concerns a trip to Frankfurt for the assembly of electors following the death of Ferdinand III, Holy Roman emperor, in 1657. This trip also included visits to Nuremburg, Munich, Heidelberg, Venice, Rome, Florence, and Turin. The account includes information on the history and political organization of the places visited, particularly Rome and the Vatican. The second describes trips to Rome with the duc de Chaulnes for the conclaves at which Alexander VIII (1689) and Innocent XI (1691) were elected.
