The first volume documents a voyage under Captain R. Edwards from England to Calcutta and Madras between 1795 and 1797; the second volume lists the crew with their stations and wages at the beginning of the volume and documents another voyage, this time under Captain David B. Barker, to Madras and Calcutta between 1797 and 1799.

Layout: In the first volume, the first nine pages are written freehand with no ruling at all, and the remaining pages are divided into upper and lower halves with a complex ruling in ink of six columns of various widths, each of 12 lines, in each half; in the second volume, the first four pages are ruled in five columns for the list of the ship's crew, and the remaining pages are printed with the format of six columns in top and bottom halves of each page.
Script: Written in a cursive script.
Binding: First volume bound in parchment; second bound in reverse calf (bookseller's description).
Origin: Written on board the Hawke during two trips from England to India between 1795 and 1799.
