Summary:

Texts of 13 prayers, or recitations of Catholic doctrine, in Mixe language, derived by C. Hermann Berendt from Augustin de Quintana's work Confessionario (Confessonario) en lengua mixe, published in 1733. Berendt has strung together in continuous texts the Mixe versions of the prayers that are given by Quintana only piecemeal, interspersed in a grammatical discussion of the language. The Spanish title is at the head of each text, sometimes followed by a more prominent Mixe title. The texts are: the Making of the sign of the cross (Persignarse); the Lord's prayer; the Ave Maria; the Apostles' creed (Credo); the Salve Regina; the Ten commandments (Mandamientos del decalogo); the Commandments of the Church (Mandamientos de la iglesia); the Sacraments (Sacramentos); the Articles of faith (Articulos de la fée); Works of mercy (Obras de misericordia); the General confession (Confesión general); the Act of contrition (Acto de contrición); and the Bendito. Two annotations by Berendt apparently give alternate Mixe constructions with respect to the Apostles' Creed (p. 3). For Berendt's handwritten transcription of Quintana's work, in which these same Mixe texts are inserted, accompanied by a parallel Spanish version, see Ms. Coll. 700, Item 99. (One evident variation in the present texts, as compared to the latter manuscript, is the added phrase at the end of some of the texts: Huin ytunot Jesus.) The tipped-in leaf (p. vi) is a note of advice in the case of printing; it suggests a different use of diacritics, with a remark about pronunciation, and urges attention to the separation of words and syllables.
