Language:
Occasional text in Italian (names of ports, notes, etc.).
Summary:
Portolan containing maps of Mediterranean ports. Not all maps are entered in the portolan. Most are executed in colors; several are unfinished and in various stages of completion.
Notes:
Ms. codex.
Title from title page (f. ii recto).
Inscriptions on title page: "D. Rocco invento, per il Sig.r: Cap: Tore." and "R. Cornico pinxit." This last notation most likely indicates the artist who illustrated the title page; it is unclear whether the same artist was also responsible for the maps.
Foliation: Paper, 151; [iii], 1-108, 110-123, [124-147], [i]; contemporary or near-contemporary foliation in ink, upper right recto of some folios. Second unnumbered folio preceding f. 1 is the title page; the first map is on the recto of the folio immediately preceding f. 1.
Decoration: Maps are executed in a variety of colors, mainly green. Title page is elaborately decorated with a mythical scene, mainly in charcoal and rose (f. ii recto).
Binding: Contemporary calf; gilded, stamped designs on spine. Cover shows signs of wear. Most of the leaves are stained at the outer edge, possibly due to water; this staining has damaged the illustration and text on some leaves.
Origin: Written in Italy, circa 1700 (Zacour-Hirsch).
Leaf laid in between f. 92-93 with text in French: "Mouillage du Golfe de la Sidra." Appears contemporary with the portolan or slightly later.
Penn Provenance:
Accessioned, 1952.
