Summary:
Autograph manuscript by Gianozzo Salviati, containing amatory correspondence, poems in terza rima, etc., concerning members of the Medici family. Includes important unpublished material on Salviati's relationships with Lorenzo the Magnificent, Giovanni de' Medici (Pope Leo X), Lucrezia Tornabuoni de' Medici (Lorenzo's daughter and Giovanni's sister) and their family. The amatory correspondence between Salviati and Lucrezia was probably not serious, but rather a literary amusement. Also includes a copy of a letter to Salviati from the poet Bernardo Giambullari, dedicating Giambullari's Sonetti rusticani to Salviati. These Sonetti rusticani are known in only one copy of the printed edition (1515), which is missing one or more leaves and lacks this dedication. Small amount of text lost due to trimming of leaves.
Contents:
Copies of "love letters" between Salviati and Lucrezia (ends in 1488; p. 1-80)
"Una pistola ... a Lucrezia" (dated 1488; p. 82-84)
Poem in terza rima concerning "Il Magnifico Lorenzo de' Medici" and "Fra Mariano dal ordine d." (dated 1515; p. 84-91)
Poem in terza rima, "Festa e chommeda ... fatta alla Cicilia di Fiesole" (dated 1522; p. 92-102)
copy of a letter to Salviati from Bernardo Giambullari (p. 137-139).
Notes:
Ms. codex.
Title from spine.
Pagination: Paper, ii (modern paper) + 70 + i (modern paper); 1-140 [103-136 blank]; modern pagination in pencil, upper outer corner.
Script: Written in a cursive script in the hand of Gianozzo Salviati.
Binding: 19th-century[?] half leather. Upper cover detached at hinge; leather spine is crumbling slightly.
Origin: Written in Florence between 1488 and 1522 (Zacour-Hirsch). Ownership inscription on p. 140 dated 1488.
The Lorenzo the Magnificent to whom the third item is attributed is probably not the famous Lorenzo the Magnificent, but rather his son Lorenzo, the Duke of Urbino, brother of Pope Leo X. A later owner's note in the manuscript identifies Fra Mariano as the buffoon of Pope Leo X.
The fourth item concerns the "Rappresentazione" presented at the church of St. Cecilia in Fiesole on 6 July 1522.
Endleaves contain a description of the manuscript in Italian, written in Florence and dated 16 June 1939. Inside upper cover contains a label with a modern description of the contents, also in Italian.
A modern transcription of the Giambullari letter and some notes in Italian were laid into the manuscript. These are now on file in the Library, along with a detailed description of the manuscript, in English, probably prepared by the bookseller from whom the Library purchased it. Many of the details in the present catalog record are derived from this bookseller's description.
Penn Provenance:
Formerly owned by Gianozzo Salviati and members of his family (note, p. 140).
