Fragments of accounts rendered by Guillaume de Salins to Mahaut d'Artois, Countess of Burgundy, from her properties in the County of Burgundy (Franche-Comté). Properties listed include Arbois, Salins, [S]ceys, Belmont, Gevrey, Augerens, Bracon, Chissey, Quingey and Pontaillie.
Notes:
Ms. codex.
Title supplied by cataloger (Zacour-Hirsch).
First part is incomplete at beginning; third part is incomplete at beginning and end.
Incipit of second part: (f. 3r) Ce sont li contes que maistres Guillaumes de Salins rent de la terre que madame a en Bourgoigne.
Collation: Parchment, 11; 1¹, 2²(-1), 3²[+1]; [1-11]; modern foliation in pencil, upper right recto. Original format uncertain. The last two folios are a bifolium pasted to f. 9v.
Script: Written in various notarial hands.
Origin: Written in the county of Burgundy, in France from 1308-1315. Three sections: 1308 (f. 1r); 1310-1311 (f. 3r-v); 1315 (f. 10v).
Signatures: Possible signature on f. 9v, lower right corner: "III⁹", indicating the end of the third quire. Possible catchword, lower right corner (f. 9v).
Several of the folios are badly stained. Folios 8-9 have large tears, and f. 9 in particular shows signs of mildew damage.
Quires sewn together. No cover.
This is a fragment of a larger codex manuscript. The three manuscripts Paris, Bibl. nat., ms. fr. 8551 and Besançon, Bibl. mun., mss. 914 and 914 appear to be fragments of the same accounts. All were part of the massive 3-volume collection assembled by A.-A. Monteil (cf. Benton-Fohlen, p. 501 and Monteil, II:210), which was later taken apart for sale, possibly also by Monteil.
The manuscript Paris, Bibl. nat., Coll. Moreau, ms. 900 contains extracts which may be related to this manuscript and which appear to have been made before the larger codex was taken apart and the fragments dispersed (cf. Roberts, p. 27).
