Overview and metadata sections
Founded in London in 1847 by German émigré Bernard Alexander Quaritch (1819–1899), Bernard Quaritch Ltd. is one of the most influential antiquarian bookselling firms in the world. Quaritch has long played an especially critical role as agent for American institutions and collectors at London auctions. In addition, their catalogs served as a major source of new collections for libraries around the United States and Europe. The catalogs in this collection were nearly all received directly by the Penn Libraries from the firm when they were issued and some bear the annotations of contemporary libraries.
This finding aid serves as a guide to the more than 500 Quaritch catalogs and bulletins published after 1920 in the Penn Libraries' collections. The collection is especially comprehensive from the 1950s to 2000s. In addition to the regular series of numbered catalogs, the collection contains dozens of bulletins, special lists, and other special catalogs. The vast majority of the catalogs listed in this collection are housed in Print Coll. 60 and have box numbers. However, a few catalogs listed here are housed elsewhere by the Penn Libraries and can be identified by their respective shelfmarks. Notably however, this collection does not list Quaritch catalogs before 1920 held by the Penn Libraries. These early catalogs, including many volumes of Quaritch's General Catalogue, can be found cataloged separately in the online catalog.
