Overview and metadata sections

Richard Burn lived in Lurdenlaw, Kelso, Scotland in the 1830s. He appears to have been an amateur artist who specialized in comical drawings.

This oblong, leather-bound sketchbook contains ink drawings by Richard Burn of Lurdenlaw, Kelso, Scotland, and dates from 1831 to 1832. Each page--including the front and back inside covers--are filled with many comical sketches and caricatures, several hunting scenes, some animals, and local Scottish landscapes. The second leaf is signed and dated by Burn. Almost all of the sketches have captions and some with witticisms. A few landscape drawings are captioned "drawn from nature." There are several sketches of ghosts, devils, and/or demons with one page headed "Halloween." Many of the animals depicted are horses with the name of the horse written at bottom. Five ink drawings by another hand depict locals and include a fisherman; they are interspersed in the sketchbook and signed "E. F. R."
