Frank F. Furstenberg was born in 1905 in Stockholm, Sweden, but lived most of his life in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was an allergist at Johns Hopkins Hospital and then Sinai Hospital. He also served the U.S. Public Health Service in Florida during World War II, and was a member of several activist organizations, including the Committee for the Nation's Health, the Medical Committee for Human Rights, and Physicians for Social Responsibility. He was the founder of the Institute of Social Medicine and Community Health. Later in his life, he founded Pets on Wheels, a group that brings animals to visit the elderly. Furstenberg died in 1997 in Baltimore.
