Overview and metadata sections

John George Repplier McElroy (1842-1890) graduated second in his class at the University of Pennsylvania in 1862 and won several awards, including prizes in Greek and Latin. He taught in Philadelphia and Chicago before becoming an Assistant Professor of Greek and History at the University of Pennsylvania in 1869, a position which he held until 1876. Thereafter, he served as Professor of Rhetoric and English Language until his death in 1890. Professor McElroy was the author of A System of Punctuation(1878), How to Tell the Parts of Speech (1881), The Structure of English Prose (1885), among other books and articles.

This collection is primarily composed of lecture notes by John George Repplier McElroy (1842-1890). The majority of these notes are for lectures dating between 1867 and 1873 on the English language, the study of language, and etymology. Miscellaneous lectures in folders 33-44 cover pedagogy, rhetoric, English literature, grammar, composition, and other aspects of writing and language. In addition to the lecture notes, this collection contains McElroy's notes on his readings of Chaucer and his manuscript of Readings from the Electra of Socrates.

Gift of Clayton McElroy, 1900.
