Overview and metadata sections

An architectural designer born in Manchester, England. Rowe attended the South Kensington School of Art in London (now the Royal College of Art). In the late 19th century Rowe moved to Sydney, Australia. By 1904 Rowe was working as a principle designer for Wunderlich Limited, a manufacturer and designer of metal ceilings, roofs, and patterned walls. His designs introduced Art Nouveau patterns to the company. In 1916 Rowe became a lecturer in the art department of the East Sydney Technical College. In addition to lecturer he served as head of the art school until he retired in 1934. Rowe maintained his own business as a designer in Sydney throughout his career. He married Mary Muriel Moss in Sydney in 1903.

A cloth-covered sketchbook by Samuel V. Rowe comprising intricately patterned architectural designs for ceilings and walls in the Art Nouveau decorative style. The pencil drawings span the years from 1910 to 1921 and were created for Wunderlich Limited, Sydney, Australia. A majority of the designs appear to be for metal ceilings and decorative moldings. An elevation outline is drawn on the side of some designs. A few drawings were for wall patterns. The design motifs consist chiefly of floral and geometric patterns. Each drawing is dated and most are initialed E.W. or S.W. Notes are written on some drawings. Written on the front cover: Wunderlich. Inscription on verso of first leaf: S. V. Rowe, 96 Q. V. Markets, Sydney. Two leaves of drawings are laid in the volume. A picture postcard of a vase is laid in the volume. Label pasted on inside of cover: Students' sketch books ... W. C. Penfold & Co., Sydney.

Sold at auction at Dominic Winter (South Cerney, Cirencester, England), April 18, 2018, lot 273.
