Overview and metadata sections

A small collection of a Philadelphia printer's samples comprising one volume, two folders, and a small box. The printed samples span the years from approximately 1876 to 1920. Two printer's samples with the company name Dakin & Petry, Philadelphia are in the volume. A sample book consisting of twelve leaves contains over 250 examples of letterheads for stationery, business cards, envelopes, holiday greetings, invitations, menu headings, and messages. There are two New Year greeting samples in Hebrew. The examples display printing techniques using colored inks, embossing, and engraving on colored, glossy, and matte finish papers with a variety of fonts and design elements. One leaf in the volume consists of jeweler's letterheads and advertising. Two leaves in the volume are examples of embossed flowers, birds, and other designs. The addresses on some items are outside of Philadelphia including New Jersey, New York, and Texas. Many of the items in the volume have handwritten sample numbers. In one folder there are eleven samples of stationery and invitations providing examples of different fonts, monogram designs, and travel stationery. One folder has over 330 clipped monograms from stationery providing examples of embossing, font design, and color. Some of these are armorial devices and ship flag stationery. An example of a small jeweler's box with a monogram in silver is in the last folder. Label inside the front cover: Patent back scrap book, March 28, 1876. The volume is lacking a spine and most of the leaves are detached.
