Abstract:

This collection consists of design work completed by artist Ben Wolf (1914-1996) for The Appeal of Prints, by Carl Zigrosser. Included are a few letters to Wolf from the printer, Richard W. Taylor, dust jacket designs and mockups, galley proofs, and mockups of the book.

Ben Wolf, a painter, critic, writer, illustrator, and graphic artist, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1914 and lived in both Wellfleet, Massachusetts and Philadelphia. He studied with Carl Nordstrom, Justin Pardi, and Hans Hofmann and was a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club.

During World War II, he served as a combat artist for the Coast Guard. Throughout his career, he taught at the Wellfleet School of Art, as an Assistant Professor of Art at the Provincetown, Massachusetts College of Art, and briefly at both the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His illustrations appeared in publications such as Life magazine, Art Digest, and National Observer. He sold artwork at the Warwick Galleries in Philadelphia and several of his pieces are held at the National Gallery of Art. He is the author of Morton Livingston Schamberg: A Monograph. He died in 1996.
