Abstract:

A typescript comprising an inventory of the library of Frederick E. Hyde, a physician in New York City, dated December 1908.

Frederick E. Hyde was one of nine boys born to Edwin and Elizabeth Alvina Mead Hyde in Connecticut. Hyde was a doctor in New York City. He graduated from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1874 where he was assistant to the chair of practice surgery. Hyde later had his own practice as a physician. Hyde married Ida Josephine Babbitt in 1869 and the couple had five children: Elizabeth A., born in 1870; Benjamin Talbot Babbitt, born in 1873; Frederick Erastus Jr., born in 1875; Ida J., born in 1877; and Mabel Lillia, born in 1882. Hyde's wife Ida died in 1890. In 1905 Hyde married Katharine Bolton Houghton. Hyde was a delegate to the archdeaconry at the Parish of the Incarnation, a member of the Linnæn Society of New York, and on the board of trustees at the American Museum of Natural History. Hyde traveled frequently including to Egypt in 1899.

A typescript with pre-printed red, ruled edges and numbered pages comprising an inventory of the library of Frederick E. Hyde dated December 1908. Library books is typed on the title leaf followed by one leaf providing a brief table of contents. The catalog is divided into two sections: bound books on pages 1 to 152 and paper books on pages 152 to 172. The books are alphabetically arranged by author and span publication dates from 1833 to 1907. The library has a variety of subjects. Hyde's interests include the bible, religion, hymns, prayers; travel guides and stories; several titles regarding Egypt; natural history; art history; and reference. Authors of note include Darwin, Dickens, Kipling, and Shakespeare. Curiously, there are few books in the library's inventory concerning medicine. Hyde included the author, title, publisher, year and size for each work in his library and notations on the condition. Cross reference notes are also in the inventory.
