Overview and metadata sections
It is unclear who collected the advance notice announcements and reviews of Islands in the Stream, a novel by Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) which was published posthumously in 1970. It was the first of his posthumously published works. After his death, Mary Hemingway found 332 written works including novels, stories, and unfinished pieces. This novel follows three different stages in the life of the main character, Thomas Hudson, an American marine painter. These three stages were separated into sections entitled "The Sea When Young," "The Sea When Absent," and "The Sea in Being" by Hemingway. By the time of publication, these titles were changed to "Bimini," "Cuba," and "At Sea." Around the same time, Hemingway wrote The Old Man and the Sea, which according to Malcolm Cowley (box 1, folder 7), Hemingway thought might serve as a coda to Islands in the Stream, but was instead published separately.
This collection contains newspaper and magazine clippings of reviews from Ernest Hemingway's Islands in the Stream, which was written in the late 1940s and early 1950s, but published posthumously in 1970. There are several advanced notice announcements from April to October 1970 and book reviews from October 1970 to May 1971. The majority of these reviews come from October 4, 1970 and October 11, 1970. The reviews, overall, are mixed but the common sentiment is that the novel is underwhelming and seemingly unfinished. A clippings service appears to have been used and clippings were collected from across the United States.
