Overview and metadata sections

Hazel Marie Griffin graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1956 with a M.A. in South Asia regional studies and in 1972 with a Ph. D. in Education. She was the manager and English teacher at the Prentiss Girls' Higher Secondary School in Etah, Uttar Pradesh, India from 1949 to 1954 as well as an Indologist and the head of the South Asian languages section of the Library of Congress. She studied South Asian subjects, focusing on women's issues and education, and transcribed original source British documents from the early to mid-19th century.

This collection contains typescripts of British primary source documents on India dating from the early to mid-19th century. Griffin created these typescripts between 1977 and 1988 and subjects range from sati (widow immolation) to medicine with a focus on education. There are twelve volumes titled, "Notes on Education in India" and seven other volumes that focus on specific areas of Indian education in the 19th century. In addition to this, there are typescripts focusing on public consultations, biographies of Anglo-Indians, and general South Asian documents from before and after 1850. These documents provide access to much of the written history of India before the Indian Rebellion of 1857 in which the Indians fought against the rule of the British East India Company, resulting in the dissolution of the company in 1858 and India being governed directly by the British crown.

Volumes are arranged alphabetically by the titles given by Griffin. On a few occasions, there are supplements or indexes that may help researchers navigate the topics contained within multiple volumes.
