Overview and metadata sections
This collection is composed of several hundred photographs taken in India and Egypt, probably by a British soldier. It's possible the soldier was part of the 2nd Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment which was on garrison duty in India and the Sudan from 1921 to 1939.
This collection is composed of several hundred photographs taken in India and Egypt, probably by a British soldier. It's possible the soldier was part of the 2nd Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment which was on garrison duty in India and the Sudan from 1921 to 1939. The album is undated but probably captures the 1920s and 1930s. A very small number of the photographs are captioned directly on the photograph, but most are entirely uncaptioned. A few photographs are missing from their mounts.
Most of the photographs are of various sights, buildings and locals. Researchers will find views of Baghdad, Port Said, Kamptee, Mangalore, and Nagpur as well as harbors, cities, rural villages, street scenes, temples, a Mohamedan [sic] Mosque, several Churches of England, and monuments. This volume also documents the military scene with photographs of men in uniform, an arsenal (name illegible), a detention hospital, army lodgings (barracks and mess), sporting events, and British and Indian soldiers drilling and in transport. In the photographs, there are signs for the St. Joseph' Convent, the VI Royal Warwickshire Regiment, the Army Signal School, the Willington Soldiers' Club, A'Nagard L.B. Offices, and the Office of the Ahmednagar Wing, Small Arms School. The last pages contain photographs of riots.
