Overview and metadata sections

Burton Rascoe was an early 20th century American literary critic, journalist, editor, and author. He was born Arthur Burton Rascoe in Fulton, Kentucky on October 22, 1892, the son of Matthew Lafayette and Elizabeth (Burton) Rascoe. Along with his brothers Henry and George, Rascoe grew up in Shawnee, Oklahoma, where his literary proclivities manifested early on as a reporter for the Shawnee Herald at the age of fourteen. In 1911, he left to attend the University of Chicago, where he quickly secured the position of campus correspondent for the Chicago Tribune. After two years of study, Rascoe left the University of Chicago to work for the Tribune full-time as assistant city editor and special assignment reporter. During his tenure there, Rascoe worked "for the recognition of contemporary American writers--Sherwood Anderson, Dreiser, Carl Sandburg, Henry Blake Fuller, H.L. Mencken, James Branch Cabell, and many others--he made controversy his business. He attacked these writers' enemies, exhorted his readers to read their works, and even--when he could get away with it--printed their work for pay," (Hensley, page 24). He also contributed articles to the Bookman, Dial, the English Journal, the Freeman, New Republic, Smart Set, and the Wave. As a critic in Chicago, he "conducted sizzling rows with his critical contemporaries on the other journals, suavely insulted the most popular writers of the day so that they wrote furious replies, which he printed with delight, and generally pepped up the culture of the community ... in short, he raised a great deal of hell in Chicago and his influence is still felt" (Starret, page 6). In 1920, after having become literary and drama editor, Rascoe was dismissed from the Tribune because "they got fed up with the independence of [his] opinions and point of view," (Rascoe, document fragment, box 16, folder 21).

In 1920, Rascoe and his family (wife, Hazel, and children, Arthur Burton and Ruth Helen) moved to New York where Rascoe took a job at McCall's as associate editor. Only a year later, Rascoe became the editor of the New York Tribune, where he ran his popular "A Bookman's Day Book" series, diary-like articles relating to the literary goings-on of the day. In 1924, the Tribune acquired the New York Herald to become the New York Herald-Tribune and Rascoe was laid off.

He continued to write "A Bookman's Daybook" which appeared in more than 400 newspapers across the county and wrote a weekly column called "The Book of the Week," as well as contributing to a wide variety of publications including Arts and Decorations, the D.A.C. News and Vanity Fair, to name only a few. He worked as editor of The Bookman from 1927 to 1928, as a member of the editorial board of the Literary Guild of America from 1928 to 1937, and as editor of Plain Talk from 1929 to 1930. The 1930s saw Rascoe become editor for Esquire from 1932 to 1938, one of his longer tenures after his time at the Chicago Tribune; editorial advisor at Doubleday, Doran & Co. from 1934 to 1937; literary critic for Newsweek from 1938 to 1939; and critic at American Mercury (starting in 1938).

In addition to writing for newspapers and journals, Rascoe also authored several books including Theodore Dreiser in 1925, A Bookman's Daybook in 1929, Titans of Literature in 1932), Prometheans in 1933, the Joys of Reading in 1937, and Belle Starr: 'The Bandit Queen' in 1941. He also authored two autobiographical works Before I Forget in 1937 (which resulted in a libel suit initiated by Max Annenberg, a circulation man for William Randolph Hearst, over comments by Rascoe regarding Annenberg's corruption in Chicago) and We Were Interrupted in 1947.

During the 1950s, Rascoe continued to write for various newspapers, but was best known for his syndicated column "TV First-Nighter." Throughout his career, Rascoe was unfailingly honest and forthright in his opinions and beliefs relating to the quality of literature as well as current events and politics. According to Hensley, Rascoe

exposed much of the artificiality of the literature and fought for a distinctive American literature and language: he fought against the "genteel" tradition, academicism and pedantry, the literary humanists, censorship, and the control of American literature by foreign literature and writers. He played a useful role in contributing to the public acceptance of H. L. Mencken, Theodore Dreiser, T.S Eliot, Sherwood Anderson, Ernest Hemingway, James Branch Cabell, Edmund Wilson, and many others; and he was important as a publicizer of their work. He provided significant personal and professional help to many young writers; and as an editor, he inspired them to do their best work, provided opportunities for them, and helped establish their reputations. In his efforts to democratize American literature and culture, he did some of the important early work in helping to broaden, to enlarge, and to raise America's culture standards and literary level. (Preface)

From a political standpoint, Rascoe "fought Communists; he fought anti-anti-Communists; and not long before the end he defied the wrath of the Establishment by citing chapter and verse to prove that Senator Joe McCarthy had gentlemanly qualities," (obituary in National Review).

Rascoe married Hazel Luke (1891-1971) on July 5, 1913 and they were the parents of Arthur Burton Rascoe (1914-1936) and Ruth Helen Rascoe (1918-1968). According to Vincent Starret in an annotated typescript in the collection, Rascoe had "opinions on everything--opinions precocious, brash, profane, individual, usually intelligent," (page 2) and was "cordially disliked by many persons, and completely loved by many others," (page 8). He died of heart failure on March 19, 1957, having "produced a prodigious amount of first-rate journalism; [and written] influential books of criticism, autobiography and history," (obituary in National Review).

For more complete biographical information, researchers should consult Rascoe's autobiographies, Before I Forget and We Were Interrupted, as well as a biography, Burton Rasoce by Donald M. Hensley.

Scope and Contents

The sizeable correspondence series reflects the wide range of writers and publishers with whom Rascoe conducted professional and personal business over the course of his career. In particular, there are a significant number of letters to and from Sherwood Anderson, Maxwell Bodenheim, James Branch Cabell, Theodore Dreiser, Lewis Galantiere, Harry Hanson, Ben Hecht, H. L. Mencken, George Jean Nathan, Isabel Paterson, and Carl Van Doren. In addition, there are letters to and from many other notable figures, but researchers should be aware that there are often only a few letters contained within the collection. A few of these authors include Conrad Aiken, John Dos Passos, James T. Farrell, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ford Madox Ford, Waldo Frank, Joseph Hergesheimer, Sinclair Lewis, Carl Sandburg, John Steinbeck, and Thornton Wilder.

Because this is the correspondence of a literary man, files occasionally include drafts of works that were sent for comments, and the letters themselves (especially those from professional writers) are usually quite lengthy and written with literary value in mind. Many of the letters are lively and entertaining and quite a few include illustrations (see Edward C. Caswell, Gene Markey, Robert "Biddy" Nathan, Judy Rascoe, and Anna O. Thomas). This correspondence, arranged alphabetically by Rascoe's correspondent, is a blend of personal and professional; and it is evident that many relationships that began professionally evolved into personal friendships. Researchers interested in Rascoe's family life will find a number of letters to and from (and sometimes regarding) his parents, wife, children, and brothers.

Scope and Contents

Rascoe's diaries and notebooks in the collection do not provide a complete picture of Rascoe's life and while some contain significant content, others are quite sparse. The diaries, notebooks, and appointment books include everything from larger books with more substantial writing, to writings in what appear to be sample/example volumes of published books, to small flip-books with barely legible scribble.

The appointment books, diaries, and notebooks date back to 1906 with Rascoe's Shawnee High School English notebook and stretch at least until 1930, though many are undated. Of particular interest may be Rascoe's earliest diaries which were written before he began his college studies. The diary from 1909 was faithfully completed while the diary from 1910 was filled more sporadically; but in both cases, there are examples of Rascoe's writings; his commentary on friends and family, writers, philosophers, books, and politics; and quotes from notable individuals. These volumes are arranged alphabetically by type and chronologically within each type (appointment books, diaries, notebooks).

Appointment book/calendar with a few items stapled to pages (used very little), 1957.

Scope and Contents

Rascoe's writings consist mainly of drafts, most of which were later published as articles in periodicals or as books. The series is arranged in four subseries. The contents of this series along with the final series in the collection (Series VIII. Clippings, research, and scrapbooks) will provide researchers with a fairly complete picture of Rascoe's writing style, body of work, and subject interests.

The first subseries, A. Books, non fiction, is divided into published works and unfinished works. Published works contains Rascoe's books of literary criticism and non-fiction, including drafts of published titles such as An American Reader, Before I Forget, Belle Starr: "The Bandit Queen", Prometheans, and Titans of Literature. There is limited correspondence and research included in this group of materials. Unfinished works includes typescripts of manuscripts that do not appear to have been published in their existing form and are in varying degrees of completeness. It is possible that some of these manuscripts were heavily edited and published under different titles. This subseries is arranged alphabetically by title.

The second subseries, B. Fiction, includes drafts of short stories, a "novelette" and a few plays. It is not always clear if these drafts were published. This subseries is arranged alphabetically by title.

In C. Articles for periodicals, researchers will find an extensive run of articles and essays intended for publication in newspapers and periodicals. These articles are grouped broadly by their subject. For the most part, these are annotated typescripts, often heavily corrected, presumably by Rascoe. Researchers interested in the printed versions of Rascoe's writings for newspapers should consult the final series (Series VIII. Clippings, research, and scrapbooks) which contains clipped copies of many of Rascoe's writings. This subseries is divided into i. Book reviews written by Rascoe (arranged alphabetically by author of work reviewed); ii. Articles on authors and literature (arranged alphabetically by article title, or topic if no article title exists); iii. Articles concerning the United Nations, communism, politics, war, and foreign policy (arranged alphabetically by article title, or topic if no article title exists); and iv. Miscellaneous articles (arranged alphabetically by article title, or topic if no article title exists).

In the final subseries, D. Periodicals containing works by Rascoe, researchers will find complete journals and magazines which contain Rascoe's works. These volumes are arranged alphabetically by title of periodical.

Scope and Contents

This series is divided into A. Periodicals; B. Pamphlets and books; C. Government and legal publications; and D. Writings possibly sent to Rascoe for review. The periodicals consist of complete magazines and journals which do not contain works by Rascoe and are arranged alphabetically by title of publication. Pamphlets and books are arranged alphabetically by author of the volume. Government and legal publications include court proceedings and reports from Senate committees and are arranged alphabetically by organization creating the report. Finally, Writings possibly sent to Rascoe for review are arranged alphabetically by author of article or typescript.

Rascoe appears to have been a voracious reader (his library was sold to the University of Pennsylvania), and these items are probably a small sampling of the types of material he consulted for research.

Scope and Contents

In 1937, Max Annenberg sued Burton Rascoe and Doubleday, Doran, and Co. for alleged libelous remarks made by Rascoe in his autobiography Before I Forget, published by Doubleday, Doran, and Co. earlier that year. This series contains material that was presumably collected by Rascoe and his lawyers in order to fight the charges. Researchers will find correspondence and clippings related to the Rascoe case, as well as a number of Annenberg's legal documents unrelated to Rascoe's case that were presented as "exhibits." Rascoe's original order of this material (explained in box 15, folder 10) was retained.

Letter to Lewis M. Greene, Esquire and lists of evidence compiled by Rascoe's lawyers during the suit (this original order maintained in the following folders), circa 1939.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains a modest number of photographs, largely of Burton Rascoe. Many of these photographs were publicity shots or formal portraits. However, there are also a number of informal photographs which document Rascoe's youth and family. Researchers will also find collected photographs of athletes; "famous people," especially authors, some of which were inscribed to Rascoe; Belle Starr and the west, which probably were collected while Rascoe researched Starr for his book Belle Starr: "Bandit Queen;" and the Peabody Book Shop, which feature the owner, Siegfried Weisberger, and author H.L. Mencken. Finally, a number of sketches can be found in this series. Some of these sketches were drawn by Rascoe while others were drawn for him and include portraits and caricatures of Rascoe and a lovely sketch of his wife, Hazel.

Scope and Contents

Series VII. Biographical information and memorabilia contains a wide variety of material including articles about Rascoe, items laid into books from Rascoe's library, interviews (annotated) with Rascoe, and a few items of personal and professional memorabilia. This memorabilia includes book plates, a printed "apology" for bad behavior at a party, and an expense account for the Tribune, to name a few. Researchers will also find "Book Meeting" notes which include descriptions of books and authors and whether these books were accepted or declined. The group's members are described only by initials such as ND, JJH, KMcC, HEM, JWP, BR (Burton Rascoe), MJS, JT, and LAC.

Scope and Contents

The final series, Series VIII. Clippings, research, and scrapbooks includes clippings of Rascoe's writings; clippings about Rascoe and reviews of his works; collected clippings (not by or about Rascoe); and scrapbooks, presumably created by Rascoe. Many of the clippings and scrapbooks are extremely fragile in nature and while many of the original loose clippings were photocopied for preservation, the scrapbooks continue to be at risk and therefore researchers interested in the scrapbooks will require assistance from a curator. Although the clippings in this series were printed and published, many contain notes and comments by Rascoe. This group of materials as a whole contains the most complete picture of Rascoe's journalism oeuvre. Researchers should also consult Series III. Works by Rascoe in order to see drafts, largely in typescript format, of many of Rascoe's journalistic writings, as well as his books and fiction.
