Overview and metadata sections

The front cover of this oblong volume with worn paper boards bears the year 1843. "Libro de varias clases de letras Puerto Rico, y febrero 16 de 1843" is written in cursive and decorative scripts on the first leaf. The volume comprises the Spanish alphabet in various ornamental and calligraphic styles in black ink. Rosell y Arrufat has employed cursive, block, floral, scenic, and other decorative elements in the alphabets. On some leaves more than one style of alphabet is shown and some leaves have capital and lower case letters. There is an alphabet with letters drawn of trees, one with the letters created from people and animals consisting of small square scenes, and one with drawings of hands illustrating the alphabet in sign language. There are seven full-page drawings in the volume: five are in watercolor and ink and two are in pencil. The images consist of landscapes, a cemetery, a collection of various national flags, and street maps. On the recto of the leaf with national flags, Rosell y Arrufat indicates he is from Toa Baja, Puerto Rico. The two street maps are in ink and bright watercolors. One is for the grounds of a church and the other is the street map for the western side of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Each map labels prominent landmarks, bodies of water, and street names. Some leaves have pencil sketches and some are blank.
