Abstract:

Comprises two volumes of German cookbooks written and compiled by Ida Heinemann Beermann.

Ida was born at Wildeshausen, Germany on February 18, 1893. She married Leopold Beermann (1885-1973) and they had one son Kurt born in 1922. The Beermann family lived in Hanover, Germany. In 1938 Ida, Leopold, their son, and Leopold's brother Morris Beermann and his famiy left Nazi Germany from Hamburg on board the ship President Roosevelt. The Beermann's eventually settled in Washington Heights, New York.

Comprises two volumes of German cookbooks written and compiled by Ida Heinemann Beermann. Volume one was a gift presented to Ida by her grandmother. A letter to Ida dated July 24, 1910, is laid in the volume. Her grandmother explained to her dear Ida that was time for her to learn the household work of a woman. Ida signed the volume on the first leaf July 29, 1910. Volumes one and two have preprinted section tabs dividing the recipe books. The sections are as follows: Suppen, Fische, Fleischspeisen, Braten, Saucen, Gemüse, Kartoffelspeisen, Salate, Mehl und Eierspeisen, Gelees und Gefrorenes, Eingemachtes, Pasteten, Backwerk, Getränke, and Diverses. Some sections have been left blank. There are recipes in the volumes written in different hands and some have attributions like Frau Meyer. There are many recipes for the Jewish holidays including Pesach torte, Kugel, and Gefelte fish. Several recipes for apple dishes, potatoes, meat dishes, egg dishes, and drinks are included in the volumes. Under the Diverses section at the end of volume one Ida wrote several jokes and puzzles. In five separate folders are recipes written on slips of paper, index cards, and old correspondence. One recipe is written on the verso of a typed note from a Jewish veterans group dated 1934. Folders 1 and 2 have handwritten recipies in German. Folder 3 contains clippings of recipes from German publications. Folder 4 contains some recipes written in English and clippings in English. Folder 5 contains some commercial recipe booklets including "Dr. Oetker's Rezepte für Küche und Haus," and others for gelatin.
