Abstract:

A volume containing fifty-nine letters written to and compiled by Arthur Demerick Marble. Letters are chiefly from family members to Marble spanning the years 1867 to 1875.

Arthur Demerick Marble was born at Hingham, Massachusetts to Deborah Hawkes and Demerick Marble (1819-1898). He had one brother Charles H. (b. 1858). Arthur became a civil engineer and worked in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He married Mary O. Richardson in November 1876 and the couple had a daughter Marion.

One cloth-bound volume containing fifty-nine letters written to and compiled by Arthur Demerick Marble spanning the years 1867 to 1875. A majority of the letters are from his father Demerick Marble and his brother Charles H. Marble with the bulk of the correspondence from 1874 to 1875. The first letter in the volume is from Arthur's grandmother Olive A. Marble dated August 18, 1867. The letters 1867 to 1868 are during the summer months when Arthur was age fourteen to fifteen and staying with his cousin James in the summer. His father and grandmother provide news from home. There is no correspondence for the years 1869, 1870, and 1873. In October 1871 Arthur is staying in New York City. He received his first letter from his brother Charles. The Marble family expresses how much they miss him and relay family conversations and visits. During 1874 and 1875 Arthur is living and working as an engineer in Lawrence, Massachusetts. These letters to Arthur convey the Marble's family life in Hingham. News concerning Arthur's mother, grandfather, cousins, friends, and neighbors are written by his father and brother relaying incidents, like his mothers acute infection in her thumb, and social events. Demerick and Charles both note attending church and hearing sermons and lectures by Mr. Livermore. Arthur's father Demerick writes about the weather, his garden, the local Mason meetings, reservoir and agricultural clubs. His brother Charles relays his accomplishments in school, his activities of croquet, fishing, shrimping and clamming. There are thirty letters from Demerick Marble, twenty-five letters from Charles Marble, one letter from Olive A. Marble, a letter from the Hingham reading club, one letter from the Hingham Agricultural and Horticultural Society, one invitation to the village party.
