Overview and metadata sections
Digby was born to John Almerus and Diana Alicia Scott Digby in Cattistock, Dorset, England. The family lived at Chalmington House. Digby was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. He served in the diplomatic service. After joining the Dorset Yeomanry Digby served in South Africa during the second Boer War from 1901 to 1902. He was awarded the Queen's medal. Digby was a justice of the peace of Chalmington, Dorset. In 1903 Digby married Lady Muriel Augusta Fox-Strangways the only daughter of the 5th Earl fo Ilchester. On October 20, 1914 Digby was hit by a train and died from the accident.
A ruled volume comprising the library catalog of George Digby Hugh written approximately in 1859. The catalog was probably compiled by Digby's father or a family member since it predates Digby's birth. A notation on the verso of the first endpaper states the volume was purchased at the sale of Digby's library in 1920. The catalog of the library is arranged alphabetically and includes bibliographic information of author, title, number of volumes, and size for each work. The titles in the library span publication dates from 1582 to 1859. The majority of the titles were published in the 18th and 19th centuries. The library catalog includes antiquities, biographies, classics, dictionaries, drama, encyclopedias, history, novels, periodicals, poetry, travel, and voyages. There are several multi-volume sets in the catalog such as the Chronicles of England, Scotland, and France; Collection of memoirs; Family library; Lardner's cabinet encyclopedia; and Sir Walter Scott's novels. There are several titles in French published in Paris. Written in pencil and following the last alphabetic entry is a list of entitled Odd volumes followed by a list of Books sent to the country. On the verso of the first leaf is a list of books with a note: These books sent to Toovey to be disposed of October 1859. The library catalog is written on the recto of each leaf.
