Overview and metadata sections

Tryon was a chemist and druggist in Landport, a district of Portsea Island, Hampshire, England. He joined the pharmaceutical society in 1841. Tyron married Emily Ann Evans in 1846 and couple had five children.

A volume covered with marbled paper comprising formulas and recipes written by English chemist and druggist William George Tryon spanning the years between 1841 to 1860. The formulas in the volume were used for medicinal, hygienic, and household purposes. Additionally, the volume has a section of culinary recipes. There are medicinal formulas for balms, cordials, creams, drops, essences, extracts, liniments, lozenges, mixtures, ointments, pills, powders, salts, salves, tinctures, unguents, and washes providing remedies for various ailments and diseases. Some ailments include blisters, cholera, coughs, corns, digestion, diphtheria, ear aches, eye ailments, fevers, gonorrhea, gout, headaches, rheumatism, scurvy, spasms, and sprains. Recipes for Lady Crespigny's pills, Crutch's lozenges, and Godfrey's cordial appear in the volume. There are preparations for toiletries including cold creams, colognes, hair washes, pomades, soaps, and toothpastes. Some household recipes include blacking, cements, chalk, dyes, gunpowder, inks, pastes, poisons for pests, polishes, stains, varnishes, turpentines, and waxes. A couple of formulas are named for the chemist such as Tyron's shaving paste and Tyron's cement. A section of culinary recipes is preceded by an alphabetical index. Recipes include cakes, jellies, preserves, puddings, sauces and soups. Pharmaceutical formulas are on hand-numbered 1-179 followed by 3 blanks. An index for culinary recipes is followed by pages 1-43. An alphabetical index for the formulas is at the end of the volume. W. G. Tyron's signature is on the first endpaper. Also written in a different hand on the first endpaper: 1908 Landport May 3rd. A diagram for electrotype apparatus is on page 110. One clipping with recipes is pasted in the volume.
