Overview and metadata sections

DeWitt was one of seven children born to Charles Gerrit DeWitt, lawyer and politician, and Catherine B. Godwin. Charles A. DeWitt was born in New York and lived in Ulster county. In 1835 DeWitt traveled with his father to Guatemala where Charles Gerrit DeWitt was appointed United States Chargé d'Affaires. He lived in Guatemala until 1839. Upon returning to the United States DeWitt worked as part of the corps of engineers building the Erie Railway. He was then working in an express company. In 1858 DeWitt was made general superintendent of the United States Express Company in New York City. He retired in 1887. In 1845 DeWitt married Zarada L. Marquet. They had three children and lived in Jersey City, New Jersey.

A volume of Spanish verses and songs copied by DeWitt in August 1838 while his was living in Guatemala. Several of the poems are entitled Otros. Manyl of the works concern the theme of love. Attributions are not provided for the verses. The pages in the volume are numbered 1 to 84 followed by blank leaves. An index of first lines is at the end of the volume.
