Overview and metadata sections

A volume comprising pharmaceutical formulas and recipes for medicinal, hygienic, veterinary, and household purposes. The volume was probably written between 1850 to 1899 in or near London, England, possibly by a chemist or pharmacist. The volume contains formulas for antiseptics, balsams, castes, lotions, lozenges, mixtures, ointments, pills, powders, salts, solutions, syrups, tinctures, vinegars, and washes. The ailments and diseases for the prescriptions include chilblains, colds, coughs, digestive issues, fevers, gangrene, gonorrhea, gout, liver, rheumatism, sprains, teething, toothaches, and worms. Some formulas have been named, for instance, Dutchmans oils, Godfrey's cordial, and Kemp's mixture. Another prominent group of recipes are for toiletries including aromatics, creams, hair solutions, toothpastes, powders, lotions, oils, scents, etc. There are veterinary prescriptions to treat cows, dogs, horses, pigs, and sheep. Additionally, there are some household preparations for curry powder, diamond cement, gasogene powder, ink, plate powder, stain, and wood polish. A tabbed alphabetical index is at the beginning of the volume. A few recipes appear in the index with corresponding pages. Pages 1 to 100 are hand numbered followed by unnumbered pages. A few formulas at the end of the volume are in a different hand. There are a few names and addresses on the last leaf of the volume. One leaf comprising a list of items is laid in the volume. The volume is lacking covers and spine. The gatherings are loose with several pages detached.
