Abstract:

A volume containing culinary and medicinal recipes written and collected by Joanna Hodgkinson of Sheffield, Yorkshire, spanning the years from 1768 to 1829.

Born Joanna Taylor in Derbyshire, England around 1745. She married druggist Ralph Hodgkinson in Shirland, Derbyshire on December 16, 1767. The couple moved to Sheffield, Yorkshire where Mr. Hodgkinson owned and operated a druggist's shop from 1775-1792. The shop was then managed by the Hodgkinson's son Ralph Hodgkinson, Jr. The Hodgkinsons had two children Ralph Hodgkinson, Jr. born in 1770 and Ann born in 1782. Ralph and Joanna retired in Derbyshire

A volume with covers in vellum comprising culinary and medicinal recipes written by Joanna Hodgkinson beginning in 1768. The various recipes contained in the volume span the years from 1768 to 1829 and appear to be written in three hands. The culinary recipes include breads, cakes, curries, fish dishes, meat dishes, jellies, ketchups, picklings, pottages, soups, and wines. Recipes include baked calves head, french cutlets; arrow root, brandy, and peneroyal puddings; clear cake, bride cake; cowslip, currant, and raisin wines; syllabub; craw fish soup and oyster dishes. There are some medicinal formulas such as to remedy the bite of a mad dog, bruises, coughs, headaches, jaundice, and scurvy. Some recipes are dated and have attributions. Several recipes are signed R. Hodgkinson with one signed R. H. junior, referring to Ralph Hodgkinson and his son. Recipes dated after 1820 were probably written by Ralph Hodgkinson, Jr. Beginning on the verso of the first leaf the pages are hand numbered 1 to 94 followed by eighteen blank leaves. Reading the volume from back to front are twenty leaves with recipes. Some of these are attributed to Mrs. Clay. There are eleven leaves previously laid in the volume, now shelved separately. The last leaf is detached. Written in black ink on the front cover: J. H. memorandums and [receipts book] 1768.
