Abstract:

An oversize volume chiefly comprising clippings from English newspapers by an unknown compiler spanning the years from circa 1832-1871. Many of the items appear to be cut out from newspapers in Bath, England and include epigrams, events, illustrations, poems, parliamentary news, stories, and theater news.

An oversize parchment-covered volume chiefly comprising clippings from English newspapers spanning the years from circa 1832 to 1871. The compiler of the scrapbook is unknown. Many items appear to be cut out from newspapers in Bath, England. Newspaper items in the volume comprise epigrams, events, illustrations, poems, parliamentary news, stories, and theater news. The clippings range in size from snippets of riddles to full page articles such as the Royal dramatic fete and fancy dress ball. Hand written notations, poems, and quotations appear throughout the volume. Some hand written items are pasted in volume. One copied, handwritten item pasted in the volume is Marie Antoinette's last letter to Princess Elizabeth, 1793. There are six leaves laid in the volume: two clippings, three leaves of copied quotations, and one leaf, a letter from W. H. Wilton of West Lavington to Mr. Long dated 1871. In the letter Wilton thanks Long for his visit to West Hay. A landscape pencil drawing is pasted on the inside front cover. Several leaves are loose or detached. One leaf toward the end of the volume has a portion excised.
