Brown leather volume written by an unnamed author probably in England between the years 1800 to 1850 comprising instructions for the homes of the poor, caring for the poor, and medicinal recipes.

Brown leather volume comprising instructions for the homes of the poor, caring for the poor, and medicinal recipes. The codex was written by an unnamed author probably in England between the years 1800 to 1850. The first few leaves of the volume are dedicated to cottages and the homes of the poor. Presented are instructions to keep dampness out of the home, digging trenches, maintenance, stagnant water and weeds. Further instructions regarding the health of the poor appear under headings: wet cloaks and smoking, nursing of the sick, fevers among the poor, and rickets and food for infants. The remainder of the volume appears to be written in two hands. Medicinal recipes for a variety of ailments, some with attributions include remedies for ague, bleeding, bowel complaints, bruising, burns, cancer, consumption, coughs, dropsy, gout, indigestion, inflamed eyes, pains in the chest or back, rheumatism, sore throats, and viper bites. There are a few recipes for liniments, pills, and salves. Several of the recipes are attributed to Dr. Fowler and a few have been ascribed to Miss Way. Other attributions of note include Sir Henry Halford, Lady Pembroke, Dr. Pitcairn, and Dr. Pemberton. A quarter leaf with measurements is pasted on the inside front cover.
