Overview and metadata sections

Two paper-covered volumes containing recipes, instructions, and ingredients for dyeing fabrics, cloth, and yarns kept by Ludwig Arnold of Nuremberg, Germany spanning the years from 1836 to 1849. The volumes are written in German and contain various recipes using plants, insects, and minerals. Volume 1 has instructions and recipes with notations regarding dyeing fabrics. There is a reference and notes at the beginning of volume 1 to 18th-century dyeing specialist Le Pileur d'Apligny. The recipes and instructions comprise a large variety of colors including various shades of blues, reds, yellows, and greens. Cotton yarn samples of various colors in volume 1 are affixed to pages either with red wax, or woven through the page. Volume 2 comprises lists of ingredients followed by recipes and notes. "Arnold" is written on the covers of both volumes. Volume 1 bears the date 1838. Eight leaves are laid in the volumes. A dried leaf is laid in volume 1.
