Overview and metadata sections

Leather bound volume comprising a compilation of chemical formulas and preparations for apothecary use by Friedrich Ziegler. The first leaf of the volume reads "Manuale 1833" with Ziegler's name and town at the bottom. The first fourteen pages of the volume consist of a partial copy from an 1832 printed work entitled Ueber Bereitung der extrakte Central Blatt by German pharmacist and chemist Xaverias Landerer (1809-1885). The excerpted portion of the work provides a list of thirty-two plants followed by preparations for their extracts. A few examples are preparations for aloe, belladonna, and myrrh. The remainder of the volume is dedicated to formulas for a myriad of pharmaceuticals used for medicinal and hygienic purposes. The volume includes recipes for elixirs, powders, salves, etc. providing remedies for various ailments and diseases. There are also formulas for toiletries and creams. At the beginning of the volume are lists and recipes. Some of the lists have numerical values next to items. There are several blank pages in the center of the volume with letters of the alphabet at the top of some pages. Only the letter "F" has a short list of items. On pages [93-99] are hand-ruled grids in black ink. Starting at page 153 and ending at page [267] is an alphabetical arrangement of chemical formulas. There is an incomplete index for some formulas beginning with "A" on page [269]. A few lines of notes are on the inside back cover. Twenty-one leaves of various sizes with handwritten notes and one clipping have been laid in the volume. A thin braided book mark is laid in the volume.
