Overview and metadata sections

Prof. Svi Rin was a leading authority in the field of Semitic studies and taught at Penn from 1960 to 1982 in the Department of Oriental Studies (now called Near Eastern Languages and Cultures or NELC). Among his published books are two editions of Acts of the Gods: The Ugaritic Epic Poetry (1968 and 1996) the latter co-authored with his wife, Shifra Rin; Biblical Aramaic (1972); and Third Column of Acts of the Gods (1979 and 1992). He also published a collection of short stories and poetry.

Shifra Rin is a retired Penn librarian, who served as Hebraica Cataloger and Bibliographer from 1964 to 1983.

Uncataloged offprints acquired as part of the gift from Ruth Rin of the "Library of Svi Rin and Shifra Rin."

This collection contains offprints in the field of Semitics that were sent to Svi and Shifra Rin. It does not contain any personal papers, although there is a large looseleaf with various offprints by Cyrus Gordon, some of which contain personalized notes to Svi and/or Shifra Rin. A list of the other offprints is available in the Library of the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies.
