Overview and metadata sections

Edward Weinfeld was born in 1901 in New York, NY. As a young man, Weinfeld took night classes at New York University School of Law, graduating in 1921. In 1950, he was appointed to the Federal bench for the Southern District of New York, a position he held for the rest of his career. While on the bench, Weinfeld developed a reputation for authoritative and respected decisions that were rarely overturned.

In addition to his career as author, professor, and judge, Weinfeld served on the Commission on Bankruptcy Laws of the United States in the 1970s, an organization appointed by Congress in 1970 to conduct a sweeping study of current bankruptcy law.

Weinfeld died in 1988.

The Edward Weinfeld Bankruptcy Reform Papers, 1972-1978, include correspondence, reports, photocopies of legislation, and related material regarding Weinfeld's activity as a member of the Commission on Bankruptcy Laws of the United States and the Ad Hoc Committee on Bankruptcy Rules in the United States, two task forces charged by Congress to analyze bankruptcy law and propose legislative reform. The proposals of these two organizations led to the passage of H.R. 8200, known as the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978, a sweeping reform to the Bankruptcy Code.

The documents contained in this collection are photocopies that were created by the New York University School of Law, where Edward Weinfeld's papers are located, at the request of Geraldine Mund, a member of the Archives Committee for the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges.

Received from William E. Nelson, Weinfeld Professor of Law at New York University, on September 26, 2006.
