Robert D. Martin was born in Iowa City, Iowa in 1994. A graduate of the University of Chicago Law School in 1969, Robert Martin began his career in law as an Attorney with Ross and Stevens, S.C., in Madison, Wisconsin. He worked for Ross and Stevens, specializing in bankruptcy litigation, until 1978, when he was appointed Chief United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of Wisconsin.

Martin was a charter fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and a conferee of the National Bankruptcy Conference. From the onset of his career as a bankruptcy judge, he was a member of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ), an organization devoted to providing to providing education and advice relating to bankruptcy legislation. Martin served on the Board of Governors of the NCBJ from 1988 to 1991, as Secretary in 1994, and as the conference's President in 1996.

Martin served as a panelist and lecturer at myriad bankruptcy seminars, conferences, and meetings. He also authored a number of volumes on bankruptcy law, including Ginsberg and Martin on Bankruptcy (written with Robert E. Ginsburg) in 2000 and, beginning in 1988, Norton Bankruptcy Law and Practice.

The Robert D. Martin Papers, 1982-2000, include materials relating to Martin's activities as a committee member, Secretary, and President of the NCBJ; as a member of the National Bankruptcy Conference, which participated in the National Bankruptcy Review Commission in the mid-1990s; as a federal judge on the Judicial Conference of the United States; as a lecturer, panelist, and participant in seminars, workshops, and meetings across the United States; as a researcher on a variety of bankruptcy related issues; and related material.

In 1995, a congressional task force was formed to study existing bankruptcy legislation and suggests revisions to the Bankruptcy Code. Many of the members of the National Bankruptcy Review Commission (NBRC) were affiliated with the National Bankruptcy Conference, of which Martin was a member. This series includes correspondence, reports, meeting agenda, meeting minutes, and related material regarding Martin's participation, on behalf of the National Bankruptcy Conference, in the activities of the NBRC.

As a bankruptcy judge in the 7th Federal Judicial Circuit, Martin was a member of the Judicial Conference of the United States, the official organization of federal judges. This series includes correspondence, meeting programs, and related material regarding Martin's activity within the Judicial Conference.
