Overview and metadata sections

Geraldine Mund serves as judge on the United States Bankruptcy Court, Central District of California. First appointed on February 9, 1884, she has served three terms, and was elevated to chief judge from 1997-2002. She retired on February 9, 2011 and has since served on recall status for the court. Mund received a B.A. from Brandeis University and a J.D. from Loyola Marymount University, and was admitted to the bar in 1977.

The Geraldine Mund Papers, 1989-2002 consist of correspondence and reports related to Mund's tenure as a bankruptcy judge for the Central District of California. The collection contains three series, each arranged in chronological order.

"Ninth Circuit and Central District of California task forces on unlawful detainer and bankruptcy mills" covers the years 1989-1997 and contains correspondence, reports, studies, and meeting minutes that focus on bankruptcy fraud.

"Creation of the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA)" covers the years 1997-2001 and contains correspondence and analyses on proposed House and Senate legislation leading to BAPCPA, passed in 2005.

"Additional judgeships for the Central District of California and non-case related travel" covers the years 1993-2002 and contains correspondence and reports focusing on H.R. 2604, the Bankruptcy Judgeship Bill of 1995, and Senator Grassley's requirement that bankruptcy judges report their non-case related travel.

The collection will help researchers understand challenges to the United States Bankruptcy Court, Central District of California, and how bankruptcy judges, lawyers, and organizations sought legislative support for solutions to bankruptcy fraud and understaffed courts.
