Overview and metadata sections

Judge David H. Adams is a retired American bankruptcy attorney and judge primarily associated with the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges and the US Bankruptcy Court of the Eastern District of Virginia. He attended Washington and Lee University, receiving his A.B. in 1965 and his J.D. in 1968, and shortly thereafter began his career as a law clerk for US District Judge John A. MacKenzie. Judge Adams practiced privately from 1969 to 1993, after which he served as a judge in the US Bankruptcy Court of the Eastern District of Virginia from 1993-2008 and subsequently served as a recalled judge in the Southern and Middle Districts of Florida in 2008 and 2010-2011, respectively. He is known for his involvement with the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, having served as its president in 2004, secretary in 2000, and on its Board of Governors from 1996-1999.

The David H. Adams Papers, 1984-2006 consist of materials related to Judge Adams' activities as a bankruptcy attorney and bankruptcy judge, specifically involved with the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, as an attendee and as its president in 2004 and secretary in 2000. The entire collection consists of NCBJ materials, correspondence, and planning of its yearly conference to smaller committees, ranging in date from 1984 to 2006.

The series "National Conferences of Bankruptcy Judges" includes Judge Adams' materials from various NCBJ conferences from 1984 to 2006. Materials for each conference generally include brochures, attendee, event, and program information, and correspondence for each conference.

The series "NCBJ Mid-Year Conferences" includes Judge Adams' materials from three NCBJ mid-year conferences from 2003-2005. These materials also include brochures, attendee, event, and program information, and correspondence for each conference.

"NCBJ Board of Governors Meetings" covers material from each executive Board of Governors meeting at each annual NCBJ conference. The specific conferences included are 2000-2001, and 2003-2005. The materials for these meetings include minutes, event data, yearly committee listings and information, operating budget data/financial information, and correspondence pertaining to each specific meeting. Also included is specific budget material from a separate budget meeting in 2001, as well as loose correspondence concerning Board of Governors meetings from 1996-2001.

"NCBJ Judicial Relations Committee" includes materials from this specific subcommittee of the NCBJ itself. Because there is so much material for this singular committee, it was organized and boxed separately from the other committee listings. Materials mainly include correspondence of committee members between 2003-2005, minutes of meetings, committee resolutions, and committee membership information.

"NCBJ Committees" is a comprehensive series of all the other NCBJ subcommittees for which Judge Adams had information. Because this series contains material from a scattering of years that Judge Adams was involved with the NCBJ, materials are organized alphabetically by committee, and then chronologically for each yearly instance of the committee. For each committee, materials consist chiefly of correspondence, resolutions, and planning materials for the yearly conferences, as well as future planning.

"Miscellaneous" is a series of materials associated with the NCBJ that lacked a concrete place in the other series, namely singular, non-repeating collections of files or events, in this case including recognition or memorial services for NCBJ members, outside correspondence with other groups, and brief material on the American Bankruptcy Journal. More information can be found in the individual listings for each file in the series.
