Madalon O’Rawe Amenta is a well-respected hospice nurse and advocate. She earned her nursing degree from Yale in 1957, after previously obtaining a bachelor’s degree in history and following a brief acting stint in New York. She continued her education at the University of Pittsburgh where she earned her Master’s degree and later a PhD in healthcare.
Dr. Amenta focused her attention to the hospice care movement after serving on research project and was introduced the work nurses did. She would later found andbe first president of the Pennsylvania Hospice Network, be a founding member of the Hospice Nurse Association, and be active in many other organizations, including the (then) National Hospice Organization. In addition to her work in organizations, she was a consultant for developing and evaluating hospice care programs and curriculum at the local, state, regional, and national level.
Dr. Amenta co-wrote and was first author of the first comprehensive hospice nursing text, Nursing Care of the Terminally Ill in 1986. She has won numerous awards and honors from universities and organizations across the country. A lover of poetry throughout her life, in her retirement Dr. Amenta returned to poetry and even produced a chapbook of her work, Kandinsky and the Stars.
These papers primarily span Dr. Amenta’s professional career (c. 1960s-1997) documenting her academic research, speaking engagements, publications and experience with various professional organizations and institutions.

This subseries focuses on Dr. Amenta’s work at the (then) National Hospice Organization (currently the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization-NHPCO). This organization was founded in 1978, and Dr. Amenta was a founding member. She served on the Evaluation and Research Committee from 1979-1983 and in 1985 was liason from the NHO Board to the committee. The records here document her work on the Evaluation and Research Committee, data and results, reports, minutes and meetings, as well other materials.
