Overview and metadata sections

Founded in 1988 by Betty M. Neuman, the Neuman Systems Model Trustees Group, Inc. (NSMTG) is responsible for promoting and protecting the integrity of the Neuman Systems Model (NSM). Neuman began the development of the NSM in 1970 as a method to teach introductory nursing. The goal was to create a Holistic overview of the physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and developmental aspects of human beings. After a two year evaluation, her model was first published in Nursing Research and subsequently published in Conceptual Models for Nursing Practice in 1974 and 1980. In 1982 Betty Neuman wrote The Neuman Systems Model, which is currently in its fifth edition. The reception and demand for her model lead Neuman to establish the NSMTG in 1988 to help manage requests from indidviduals and organizations.

The NSMTG is a non-profit organization comprised of educators, administrators, researchers and practitioners from around the world. These trustees are dedicated to the improvement of nursing care through the development and use of the Neuman Systems Model. The trustees see the NSM as a method to guide practice, education, research, and health administrations to improve health care. The group provides consultations for individuals and organizations seeking to implement the model. The NSMTG is also sanctioned for making changes to the model as needed in an effort ot maintains its use in the future.

The mission of the Neuman Systems Model Trustee Group also includes conducting international forums, creating multidisciplinary partnerships to advance the model as well as to support and extend the NSM through scholarly and other creative works. Beginning in 1988 NSMTG has held biennial symposiums that examine the use of the NSM in nursing education as well as to provide an opportunity to network and discuss the NSM and its future development. Under the NSMTG the Neuman Systems Model is an internationally recognized method and is in continued practice throughout the world.

The Neuman Systems Model Trustee Group records are a collection acquired by the University of Pennsylvania, Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing in 2010. This collection was previously in the custody of the Neumann College (now Neumann University) Library in Aston, PA, before its donation to the Bates Center. Neumann University transferred rights to the Betty Neuman papers and the Neuman Systems Model Trustee Group (NSMTG) records to the Bates Center when Betty Neuman and the NSMTG donated their respective materials to the Bates Center in 2010.

Series 1, 2, and 3 focus on the by-laws, history, and members of the NSMGT. This section contains the legal documents recognizing the Neuman Systems Model Trustee Group as a legal entity in 1987 as well as the by-laws and revisions that govern the NSMTG. In addition, the materials document the foundation of the NSMGT through early correspondence, teleconference minutes, trustee agreements, news releases, and photographs. In the third series, the members of the organization are in focus. This includes lists of trustees updated as needed, biographies, and curricula vitae of members.

In the fourth and fifth series, the NSMGT’s activities are explored. These papers include board minutes and correspondence by the group from its foundation to mid-2000s. Within these papers there are talks and speeches given by Betty Neuman to the trustees during their annual meetings.

The publications and activities done by the NSMGT are highlighted in series 6, 7, and 8. In series six, copies of the newsletter, the Neuman News, are in focus. The next section explores the biennial conference the NSMGT hosted in various cities throughout the United States and Canada. The first symposia was held at Neumann College in 1986, two years prior to the NSMTG formation. Materials within this series includes correspondence and lists of topics presented at the symposiums as well as the program and related material for each symposia. The purpose of the symposium is to examine the use of the NSM in nursing education as well as to provide an opportunity to network and discuss the NSM and its future development. Series 8 focuses on the correspondence regarding the NSM and individual’s questions, requests for information or for the trustee to review papers (students and other professionals) about, inspired by, or related to the NSM. There are also communications seeking advice, reviews and/or approval for adding or changing nursing program curriculum to incorporate the NSM.

The ninth series explores the history of NSM created by Betty Neuman in 1970 as well as what the model is. This includes various articles and papers written to describe the model as well as diagrams of it. The tenth series documents the archival collection while at Neumann College, prior to its transfer to the Bates Center. This includes the deed of gift, correspondence related to the donation of the collection to the Neumann, website development and archive minutes, and research requests.

The following series (11-20) were the original Part III while at Neumann University. This contains all the printed (published or unpublished) materials written or presented regarding the NSM. This included books, book chapters, articles, presentations, and theses and dissertations.

Series 11, 12, and 13 explore the published and unpublished works about NSM or organizations that use the NSM. Series 11 is the collection of periodicals, journals and brochures either about the NSM or the implantation of the NSM at an institution, such as a university or hospital. Series 12 explores the published materials about the NSM, including papers written by Betty Neuman. Broken into two subseries, Chapters in Books and Articles, these papers are primarily photocopies. Series 13 section consists of papers and articles related to the NSM but were unpublished. These papers, abstracts, and other formats were often sent to the NSMTG for editing or review. The fourteenth series focuses on the various media formats institutions and the NSMGT used to promote the NSM or their use of the NSM. This includes organizational newsletters, videos produced, and slide presentations.

The next series contains the documents related to conferences and workshops that Betty Neuman or other trustees attended to present the Neuman Systems Model. These conferences were held within in the United States as well as international locations including Sweden, the Netherlands, Wales, and Japan. The 16 and 17 series explore the various nursing programs throughout the United States and the world that implemented the NSM as well as the tools and case studies that the NSMGT and other organizations use to explain and promote the Model.

The last two series explore the academic use of the NSM in research methods and research papers. One of the largest series, series 19 focus on student papers from master’s theses to published dissertations. Some correspondence between students and the NSMGT and Betty Neuman are contained here.

Series 20 is the library of books collected by the NSMTG. This includes the books published by Betty Neuman, autographed books, books on nursing theory, and international books (often in a foreign language).

Gift of Betty M. Neuman and the Neuman Systems Model Trustee Group, Inc., 2010.

Dr. Neuman donated her papers to the Bates Center in 2010. The Center simultaneously acquired the records of the Neuman Systems Model Trustees Group, Inc. (NSMTG), an organization dedicated to the support, promotion, and integrity of the Neuman Systems Model: the NSMTG records were donated to the Center by the Neuman Systems Model Trustees Group.

Both collections—the Betty Neuman Papers and the Neuman Systems Model Trustees Group Records—had previously been in the custody of the Neumann College (now Neumann University) Library in Aston, PA before their donation to the Bates Center. Neumann University transferred rights to Betty Neuman papers and the NSMTG records to the Bates Center when Betty Neuman and the NSMTG donated their respective materials to the Bates Center in 2010.

The Bates Center has largely kept the materials in the same order in which they came to us, with one exception. The Bates Center has formally separated the Betty Neuman Papers and the NSM Trustees Group Records into two discrete collections (MC 160 and MC 161). Bates staff has also modified some of the series names to make them more descriptive of series contents. The Bates Center staff has largely retained the archival boxes and folders in which the material had been housed in the library at Neumann University. We have by and large left the detailed typed file folder labels on the folders as they came to us. But for the sake of conciseness, we have shortened the folder labeling in transcribing the information to the box list that appears below.

Scope and Contents note

This series contains student papers and research into the Neuman Systems Model. Broken into three subseries, Master’s Theses, Dissertation Proposals, and Published Dissertations, these papers were often sent by students who used the NSM as the subject of their final degree paper for the NSMTG to have in their collection. In some instances there are correspondence between students and Betty Neuman or another trustee who helped them in understanding and creating their paper as well as edited notes and papers. Some papers are formally or informally bound while others are loose pages. The published dissertations were either sent by the student or the NSMTG obtained a copy of the final paper.
