In 1925, this fund was established by Minnie Antoinette Moore Tatem in memory of her husband, Joseph Fithian Tatem, Wharton B.S. 1889.

Mr. Tatem received his L.L.B. from Harvard, and was a member of the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Bar Associations. He served in the Spanish American War as a U.S. Navy Ensign on the U.S. steamship Resolute, receiving the Bronze Medal, then went on to a successful law career.

A lifelong resident of Haddonfield, New Jersey, he was an active and charitable member of the community. During the First World War, he chaired the Red Cross drive and helped raise more than $8,000.00 from the citizens of Haddonfield, and during his lifetime was active in many Haddonfield organizations.

But his greatest charitable work was in education. As a member for many years on the Haddonfield Board of Education, he sought to improve and enrich the curriculum and was instrumental in the Haddonfield School, his alma mater, being recognized by the State of New Jersey.

It is fitting that we continue to remember this Penn graduate at the Penn Library.
